The Global Opportunities team is the special projects engine of Octopus Energy Generation. We operate at the frontier of the energy transition – entering new markets, developing innovative financing models, and tackling complex challenges where the energy industry is evolving at pace. We’re looking for a proactive, curious, and highly motivated intern to support high-impact renewable energy and investment projects across emerging markets, with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys analysing complex markets, translating research into clear insights, and gaining hands-on experience in how Octopus originates, evaluates, and scales clean energy opportunities – working closely with senior leadership from day one. What You'll Do... The primary focus of this role is Octopus Energy Power Africa (OEPA) – our flagship initiative aiming to mobilise $450m of investment into sub-Saharan Africa. You’ll help shape a scalable investment approach that unlocks commercial opportunities across one of the most compelling regions in the global energy transition. You’ll support the OEPA team across market research, investment pipeline development, and investor engagement – conducting market sizing and landscape analysis, tracking policy and regulatory developments, and preparing materials that inform investment decisions and external communications. You’ll assess opportunities against OEPA’s mandate, contribute to early-stage screening and commercial thinking, and help define models that link power generation with productive economic use in this fast-evolving region. A secondary focus will be our wind and solar project in Sierra Leone – a live example of deploying innovative, localised generation models in emerging markets, aiming to power 1,200 homes and businesses on Sherbro Island. Alongside broader project support, you’ll contribute to stakeholder coordination, support delivery planning, and help shape community engagement and green skills initiatives that underpin the project’s long-term viability and impact. Day-to-day responsibilities * Work closely with colleagues across OEGen and local partners to support renewable energy investment activities in Africa * Conduct market research, opportunity mapping, and sector analysis to build OEPA’s opportunity pipeline * Track policy, regulatory, and macro developments across key power markets to inform investment strategy * Support investor engagement, including preparing investment materials, briefings, and strategic updates for senior leadership * Contribute to commercial assessment of opportunities, including early-stage screening and structuring considerations * Support stakeholder engagement and on-the-ground insights for the Sierra Leone project * Contribute to the design of community and green skills programmes linked to project delivery
