Within the Elia Group, Elia Engineering is responsible for all infrastructure projects that meet requirements with respect to the development, expansion and renewal of the Belgian electricity transmission system between 30 and 380 kV. As a Technical Designer Secondary Systems, you will play a crucial role in the design and realisation of various electric installations and systems (protection, automation and control). Each project involves close collaboration with project engineers, technicians (MAC), experts and occasionally external study offices. Our Technical Designers work in a team of about 15 colleagues, where knowledge sharing is highly valued. The work of a Technical Designer Secondary Systems is divided into 2 different phases: 1. Tasks during study phase: • Based on the project note, carry out a study to adapt standard drawings to achieve the desired end result (and key intermediate phases). Taking the Elia norms, standards and methods into account and in most cases also the integration of the project in an existing substation. The design is done with AutoCAD. An important step is the quality control of the study. • Discuss and solve problems together with the project engineer • Sending the drawings to the appropriate departments • During the construction of the cubicles, being in close contact with the internal and external stakeholders to rapidly solve problems 2. Tasks during the construction phase: • Be in close contact with the contractor for solving problems during construction phase • Be in close contact with the technicians during the commissioning to solve issues • Finding solutions to Secondary Systems problems on site, in consultation with the project leader and technicians on site To boost the training of the starters we created a new traineeship. This traineeship takes 6 months • The first weeks consist mainly of a classical explanation of the main components of the protection, automation and control systems. Some small design exercises are carried out to learn to know how to handle the different tools • Afterwards, the study for a fictitious project will start. This fictitious project is used the train you for every step of a normal project, with a focus on acquiring the necessary competences. • During this traineeship, various site visits and supplier visits are organized to show what happens with the drawings after a study (construction and testing of the cubicles and integration of those cubicles in a relay building in a substation) This traineeship will group the different starters according to their preferred language (Dutch or French), ensuring an optimal environment to learn from the coaches but also form each other. The next session starts in March 2026. Goal: To be able to start on your own first projects as a Technical Designer by the end of the traineeship.
