Job Description

The Control Application Engineer Intern will work in the Control and Protections Systems Department within the HVDC unit of GE Vernova to support the design and implementation of HVDC Control and Protection Systems to meet the demands of the grid and renewable energy market. About us UK Grid Solutions Limited - Power Electronics, Stafford is an international leader in high power electronics and control technology, specialising in the engineering of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Systems using both Line-Commutated (thyristor-based) and Voltage-Sourced (IGBT-based) converter technologies. With over 50 years of experience in HVDC, GE worldwide HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford provides complete turn-key solutions for the rapidly-growing global HVDC market. Project Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Test Laboratories and Research & Development are all located in Stafford. This unique setup gives HVDC engineers at Stafford exposure across the manufacturing cycle; allowing innovation and design to quickly influence new and existing products. The HVDC Technology Departments are at the forefront of worldwide innovation in HVDC and are expanding rapidly. Role overview As an Intern you will report within the Control and Protections Systems Department. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and growing team of engineers working on the design of HVDC Control Systems. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of control engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Control & Protection Systems Engineering supports the design and implementation of HVDC Control and Protection Systems by analyzing customer requirements, assessing the necessary deviation from standard solutions, modelling the proposed HVDC control system, providing requirements for the hardware and software teams to implement and validate the resulting system. Responsibilities: • Work as part of an expert team, giving ample opportunity for learning design and development skills highly relevant for working with any control and protection system; in particular, power electronics systems and grid technology. • Execute with guidance from senior engineering resources, the analysis, simulation, test, and integration required to define, and support assigned components, modules or systems that meet business standards Including: • PSSE/PSCAD and PSSE/RSCAD Power system network conversion, modelling and verification. • Plant modelling of HVDC System in various simulation tools (MATLAB, RSCAD, PSCAD etc) and its verification. • Support in producing required technical documentation, under the supervision of senior engineers. • Follow the departments standard design practices, engineering reviews and guidelines. • Use some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters but with guidance

Requirements

  • completed 2 years of degree level in a related science such as Electrical Engineering, or equivalent knowledge or experience
  • proven track record and evidence that you have the mind-set and abilities to perform the role
