Job Description

This 13-month sandwich placement offers a penultimate-year undergraduate the opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the Compliance function of a commodities trading business. The role provides exposure to compliance, regulatory, and legal activities that support trading, commercial, and operational teams across energy and commodity markets. Reporting into the London-based Compliance Manager for Financial Markets, you will support day-to-day compliance and surveillance activities in a fast-paced, commercial environment. You will gain insight into how internal policies, monitoring frameworks, and escalation processes operate in practice within a trading firm, whilst also supporting selected legal and governance tasks. The role is designed to provide meaningful responsibility, strong analytical and organisational skill development, and practical exposure to compliance and surveillance work within the commodities sector. Please note that to be eligible for consideration, candidates must be enrolled on a sandwich year degree and available to commence their placement in July 2026. This will be a full-time role, owning the following responsibilities under the supervision of the Compliance Manager and Head of Compliance as appropriate: * Support daily compliance monitoring and surveillance activities, including publication of daily position limit reports and review, resolution and escalation of trading activity alerts. * Review existing compliance and surveillance processes to help identify and action opportunities to streamline workflows and support basic automation. * Assist with tracking of policy acknowledgement, training escalation and response records, and build and maintain data-driven KPIs and dashboards to evaluate the performance of the compliance training and surveillance programs, including analysis of trends related to trading activities, alerts, and escalations. * Assist with development and maintenance of internal tools or templates to help improve monitoring and analysis compliance issues, training, decision-making, and enhance efficiency. * Conduct relevant data analysis to help refine monitoring thresholds, reduce noise in alerts, and improve the accuracy and effectiveness of surveillance activities. * Support regulatory reporting, record-keeping, and audit requests, ensuring documentation is complete and accurate. * Support KYC, counterparty onboarding, and due diligence activities, including information gathering and validation. * Support projects across the Legal & Compliance team, including surveying subscription use for budget purposes and facilitating the structure and use of the external contract lifecycle management system, LinkSquares. * On an ad-hoc basis, support the broader Legal & Compliance team with day-to-day activities including contract and documentation management.

Requirements

  • Currently studying towards a degree in either Business Management, Economics, Public Policy, Psychology, Law, or a field with coursework or work experience that includes data analysis, policy understanding, and critical thinking about organisational compliance.
  • Eligible to undertake a full-time, on-site 13-month UK sandwich placement as part of your degree.
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Excel and data, with the ability to analyse information, spot trends/patterns, and translate qualitative materials (such as policies, contracts, and written responses) into clear, structured insights.
  • A process-oriented mindset, with the ability to consider optimal ways of working and suggest practical improvements.
  • Ability to interpret internal policies and procedures, recognise potential issues, and escalate them through the appropriate channels.
  • Confident communicator, willing to ask questions and speak up when necessary.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with a range of stakeholders and across a global business.
  • Proactive, reliable, and comfortable handling confidential information in a commercial environment.
