Job Description

Fish & Richardson’s summer associates are able to use their considerable talents from day one, working closely with our attorneys on client work and receiving ongoing, constructive feedback. Throughout the program, summer associates attend social events with attorneys from their office, which helps them integrate into Fish’s collegial culture and build the relationships that will last their entire career. At Fish, IP is the focus, not a token practice. We excel at IP and patent litigation. Our focus attracts highly skilled and intellectually curious summer associates who can grasp technical concepts and legal issues quickly. In turn, we attract clients at the forefront of innovation. Their legal needs are interesting, unique, and cutting-edge, which means there’s never a dull moment for our teams. Fish is tech heavy, tech savvy, and tech happy. We are proud to be known as science nerds, techies, bookworms, and brainiacs. From firm leaders to summer associates, our attorneys bring impressive legal and technical experience to our IP and patent litigation practice. Clients rely on us to handle the most complex matters and deliver the most sophisticated results. Fish offers advanced training and a thorough introduction to our firm to help summer associates succeed. Our summer associates gain valuable experience by working on a variety of matters and learning from the best in the business. Our training, mentoring, and writing programs build a skill set that prepares summer associates to start contributing to the firm immediately. Summer associates learn directly from principals about the firm’s ground-breaking cases and bet-the-company litigations. And they attend candid panel discussions hosted by associates who provide advice and guidance based on their experiences. Overall, our goal is to show summer associates what it is really like to work at Fish, and why it continues to be the best place to practice IP law. Hear from former summer associates about their experiences at Fish. Why did you choose Fish for your 1L summer? “It had been a long-term goal of mine to work at Fish. I knew the firm had a stellar reputation in the IP field, and I wanted to learn from the best.” - Dylan Rees, University of San Diego School of Law What made you feel welcome at Fish this summer? "I felt welcome at Fish because I was surrounded by people like me who loved learning about new technology and its interactions with law.” - Andrew Waldman, Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law What surprised you about your summer at Fish? "I was happily surprised by the number of substantive projects I worked on. From legal memos to observational opportunities, I gained experience in multiple types of technology." - Gabriela Sgambati, University of Minnesota Law School What was your favorite aspect of Fish's summer program? “My favorite aspect of the Fish summer program was the summer associate writing assignment. As a 1L who had no knowledge of patent law, it was incredibly informative to start out my summer with this assignment. It made for fun conversation at lunches, debating certain arguments and discussing various strategies. The feedback gave me insight into the differences between law student writing and actual legal writing at a law firm.” - Caelen Caspers, University of Minnesota Law School Show more Pro bono is an integral part of Fish. The vast majority of our attorneys participate in pro bono work, and we include at least one pro bono work project for all summer associates. We partner with a variety of highly regarded public interest and legal services organizations around the country. Our goal is to provide early exposure and experience that will lead to a career-long commitment to pro bono work.
