Job Description

The Atmospheric Composition group from the Earth Sciences department at the BSC-CNS is looking for a highly motivated candidate who wishes to undertake a PhD on modelling and data assimilation of mineral dust aerosols. The successful candidate will advance our current knowledge on atmospheric aerosol parameters by (1) advancing data assimilation methodologies to improve aerosol representation in the atmosphere; (2) performing studies with an unprecedented use of extensive observational information from different sources (space and in-situ components); (3) constraining the model and exploiting in-situ measurements of mineral dust collected during the DUSTIMPACT campaigns, in collaboration with researchers in Spain and Germany. The person appointed will be involved in both EU and national-funded projects, and will collaborate with scientists of reputed international institutions. Successful candidates will benefit from expert training and BSC staff benefits: international multidisciplinary scientific environment and advanced applied research training. In this context, the applicant will contribute to several funded projects, including the the DUSTIMPACT national project (PID2024-157110OI-C21), funded by the Spanish State Investigation Agency. The PhD position will be funded by a grant for pre-doctoral contracts for the training of doctors under the framework of the State Program for the Promotion of Talent and its Employability in R + D + i under the umbrella and linked to the DUSTIMPACT project. DUSTIMPACT aims to advance our understanding of the role of mineral dust in the Earths climate system, with a focus on its mineralogy, particle size distribution (PSD), shape, mixing state, optical properties, and radiative effects.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, geosciences, engineering, or a related discipline
  • Knowledge in environmental, atmospheric sciences
  • Previous experience with remote sensing observations of aerosols (LIDAR, satellite) will be highly valued
  • Previous experience in model evaluation and data assimilation will be highly valued
  • Experience with atmospheric composition (modeling or observations; gases or aerosols) is desirable
  • Knowledge of atmospheric science data formats (such as NetCDF), scientific tools (e.g., CDO, NCO) and data visualization will be valued
  • Experience in HPC environments
  • Good computing skills in a high-level computer language (such as FORTRAN, C or Python)
  • Experience with revision control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team
