Job Description

You will complete temporary works designs on a daily basis. Initially, these will be simpler design packages such as basic propping schemes and working platform designs. As your experience grows, you will be given more challenging designs. You will produce design drawings, supporting calculations, the Designers' Risk Assessments (DRA), and supporting documentation. You will also be expected to review information provided by the client and use this information to inform the design. You will be given the opportunity to attend the site when opportunities arise, and this will become more regular as your experience grows in the company. You will be expected to liaise with clients, manage your own workload and report back to your supervising engineer. Though AEC is split across four offices, we operate as one collaborative workforce, and you will liaise with colleagues across each office on a daily basis. What will I learn? In your role as an Apprentice Engineer, you will initially complete temporary works designs on the more basic temporary works packages that AEC produce. Typical examples entail (but are not limited to): Hoarding Designs Basic Scaffold Designs Working Platform/ Pile Mat Designs Mast Climber/ Hoist Base Designs Weight Calculations Basic Plant Assessments Needling Schemes Basic bridge demolition packages Each design package that you are responsible for producing typically entails: Design report Supporting calculations (MathCAD) Scheme drawing (AutoCAD) Designers Risk Assessment During your first year with the company, you will have a lot to learn. The first time you undertake a job, you will have time to read about the subject and ensure you understand what you are designing. Once you have shown your ability to complete simple and high-quality design packages with little supervision (expected to be after 6 months - 1 year with the company), you will be given more challenging design schemes; typical examples are: Slope Stability Retaining wall justification Basement propping schemes Tower crane base designs Complex bridge demolition sequences Plant justification Global stability checks on structures
